As India celebrates its 69th Independence Day, a few Bollywood celebrities told us the significance of August 15 in their lives. -

Amitabh Bachan:We today are breathing the air of a free environment and that is

possible only because of the freedom that we enjoy. -

Katrina Kaif: The word ‘Independence’ brings to my mind the sacrosanct freedom of speech. Every individual should enjoy freedom in India which is the largest democracy in the world. We should remember not to undermine the efforts of those who helped us secure this freedom. One thing that I love about India is that everything is like a beautiful chaos. There is so much of beauty and want in this chaos. Although we complain and crib sometimes, at the end we can definitely find beauty in this chaos -

Saif Ali Khan – Freedom is something that all of us should cherish because not every country is free and I am proud that I am a citizen of the world’s largest democracy. We should value freedom. Lots of people gave their lives so that we could live free today. What I would like to see is a more secular India once again. Sometimes I get this feeling that we have become slightly polarised especially with the religious Hindu-Muslim stands we take which can be divisive. I would like us to accept the fact that with freedom we should really accept each other and be more tolerant and openly accepting towards each others religions and faiths. We need to see each other as Indians rather than belonging to a particular state or religion. -

Actress Kriti Sanon said, “In India everyone should have the same freedoms, be it a girl or boy, upper caste or lower caste or from any religion. In some places, girls are still not educated, put other restrictions, if we raise such small questions on a basic level then that’s the way to go towards freedom.” ‘Masaan’ star Richa Chadha said, “Freedom for every Indian girl first and foremost is to take birth. She should then take up education, choose the career of her choice and marry the person she wishes to. As of now, if something of this magnitude happens, it’d still be a significant development.” “Freedom cannot truly exist unless you know what a great, valuable opportunity it is. With freedom comes responsibility. If you know your fundamental rights and duties in a better manner, you can enjoy freedom in a better way as citizens of the country and citizens of the world,"Dia Mirza said.

Kunal Kapoor – This Independence Day I would wish for a courruption-free India and I believe this change can be brought by the common people especially the youth. Young people in the country are not materialistic. We are looking to contribute and just need to find the right avenues but till the time you find that you need to start bringing about a change in your own work. That is what I learnt in Rang De Basanti and it has stayed with me for long. You don’t have to be a politician to bring about a change. As long as the thing that you are doing, you do with a certain sense of responsibility and morality, you are doing it well enough.
