Beginning with the Bhagat Singh biopic, do not forget to watch Ajay Devgn’s The Legend of Bhagat Singh. The actor won a National award for turning into the great freedom fighter, who was hanged by the Britishers at the mere age of 23. The film tells the nerve-wrecking tale of their 63-day fast unto death to improve the conditions of Indian freedom-fighter prisoners and their immense sacrifice for the nation.


2.Mother India is not exactly the tale of the freedom struggle but it threw light on the condition of the country and the struggle of a woman in such difficult situations. One of the best movies ever made in India’s history, it is the story of a poverty-stricken village woman named (Nargis) who single-handedly struggles to raise her sons against all odds. She fights against a zamindar while struggling hard to make ends meet. She carved the identity of an ideal Indian woman who shot her own son for the sake of justice. It is a must watch for every Indian as it was also India's first submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1958.



3.The 1997 J P Dutta film Border was the gripping visualization of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. With a big star cast of Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Pooja Bhatt, Tabu, Rakhi and many more, Border made the viewers weep in the movie theatres. The film successfully portrayed the sacrifice of the Indian jawans and the loved ones they left behind in grief. Border won several awards for touching the hearts of the Indians and its songs are still the hot favourite among moviegoers and soldiers alike.

4.When it comes to patriotic films based on India’s freedom struggle, one cannot miss Aamir Khan’s award winning film Lagaan. The Ashutosh Gowariker film is listed in Time magazine's ‘The All-TIME 25 Best Sports Movies’. Set in British Raj, Lagaan is an epic sports drama which revolves around a handful of villagers who learn cricket and face the Britishers on the field with the promise of getting rid of high taxes (lagaan). Their tale of learning the English game is one of its kind story told in Indian cinema.
 

5.The love story set up in the pre-independence era is the moving tale of lovebirds – Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala. It was one of the biggest blockbusters, won five Filmfare Awards and was the first Indian film to use Dolby Stereo. The story of a freedom fighter’s daughter and a British loyalist’s son was highly acclaimed for its music, songs, picturization, cinematography, lyrics and worked wonders for Manisha Koirala’s Bollywood career.


6.Rang De Basanti connects the freedom struggle to today’s scenario of corruption and the carefree youth. As a British filmmaker invites five young carefree men to act in her film on the Indian freedom struggle, their life takes a U-turn with the killing of a friend in a fighter aircraft crash. Their rise against corruption that led to the crash woke up the youth to stand and raise their voice to bring about a change. This one never fails to leave an impact even if seen multiple times.

7.No one could bring the Father of the Nation alive on screen than international actor Ben Kingsley in the 1982 Hollywood film Gandhi. The biopic of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi went on to win eight Oscars that year including Best Picture, Best Director for Richard Attenborough and Best Actor for Ben Kingsley. It covered all the major events of his life from his South Africa stint, non-violent movement to his murder by Nathuram Godse.

8.The biographical film of Mangal Pandey starring Aamir Khan has enough to make you swell with pride and feel the sacrifice paid by the brave freedom fighter. Although the film could not make the cash registers ringing at the box office but its gripping story about the pre-independence era presents an insight into the tough freedom struggle. Wonderful performances put up by Aamir Khan, Ameesha Patel and Rani Mukerji’s make it worthwhile.

9.Haqeeqat was one of the first films made on the 1962 India-China war and was a hit. Featuring Dharmendra, Balraj Sahni, Priya Rajvansh and Vijay Anand, Haqeeqat was the story of a small battalion of Indian soldiers who fought against the giant Chinese army in chilling winters in the Ladakh region and sacrificed their lives while protecting the borders. Its hit numbers – ‘Ab Tumhaare Hawaale Vatan Saathiyo’ still bring tears.

10.The multi-starrer film Kranti starring Manoj Kumar along with Dilip Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Parveen Babi, Sarika, Prem Chopra, Madan Puri and Paintal was one of the biggest patriotic blockbusters. Set up in the pre-independence era, Kranti was a fictional story written by Javed Akhtar. The movie’s hit number ‘Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi’ picturized on Hema Malini is still one of the most popular emotional songs of Bollywood.
