Top 10 films to watch on Independence Day

08:48 Shahid 0

1.Planning a fun-filled Independence Day? Embrace this freedom by
watching the most realistic patriotic movies which remind us of the long
freedom struggle. Beginning with the Bhagat Singh biopic, do not forget
to watch Ajay Devgn’s The Legend of Bhagat Singh. The actor won a
National award for turning into the great freedom fighter, who was
hanged by the Britishers at the mere age of 23. The film tells the
nerve-wrecking tale of their 63-day fast unto death to improve the
conditions of Indian freedom-fighter prisoners and their immense
sacrifice for the nation.

2.Mother India is not exactly
the tale of the freedom struggle but it threw light on the condition of
the country and the struggle of a woman in such difficult situations.
One of the best movies ever made in India’s history, it is the story of a
poverty-stricken village woman named (Nargis) who single-handedly
struggles to raise her sons against all odds. She fights against a
zamindar while struggling hard to make ends meet. She carved the
identity of an ideal Indian woman who shot her own son for the sake of
justice. It is a must watch for every Indian as it was also India's
first submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in
1958.

3.The 1997 J P Dutta film Border was the gripping visualization of the
Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. With a big star cast of Sunny Deol, Jackie
Shroff, Sunil Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Pooja Bhatt, Tabu, Rakhi and many
more, Border made the viewers weep in the movie theatres. The film
successfully portrayed the sacrifice of the Indian jawans and the loved
ones they left behind in grief. Border won several awards for touching
the hearts of the Indians and its songs are still the hot favourite
among moviegoers and soldiers alike.

4.When it comes to patriotic films based on India’s freedom struggle, one
cannot miss Aamir Khan’s award winning film Lagaan. The Ashutosh
Gowariker film is listed in Time magazine's ‘The All-TIME 25 Best Sports
Movies’. Set in British Raj, Lagaan is an epic sports drama which
revolves around a handful of villagers who learn cricket and face the
Britishers on the field with the promise of getting rid of high taxes
(lagaan). Their tale of learning the English game is one of its kind
story told in Indian cinema.

5.The love story set up in the pre-independence era is the moving tale of
lovebirds – Anil Kapoor and Manisha Koirala. It was one of the biggest
blockbusters, won five Filmfare Awards and was the first Indian film to
use Dolby Stereo. The story of a freedom fighter’s daughter and a
British loyalist’s son was highly acclaimed for its music, songs,
picturization, cinematography, lyrics and worked wonders for Manisha
Koirala’s Bollywood career.

6.Rang De Basanti connects the freedom struggle to today’s scenario of
corruption and the carefree youth. As a British filmmaker invites five
young carefree men to act in her film on the Indian freedom struggle,
their life takes a U-turn with the killing of a friend in a fighter
aircraft crash. Their rise against corruption that led to the crash woke
up the youth to stand and raise their voice to bring about a change.
This one never fails to leave an impact even if seen multiple times.

7.No one could bring the Father of the Nation alive on screen than
international actor Ben Kingsley in the 1982 Hollywood film Gandhi. The
biopic of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi went on to win eight Oscars that
year including Best Picture, Best Director for Richard Attenborough and
Best Actor for Ben Kingsley. It covered all the major events of his life
from his South Africa stint, non-violent movement to his murder by
Nathuram Godse.

8.The biographical film of Mangal Pandey starring Aamir Khan has enough to
make you swell with pride and feel the sacrifice paid by the brave
freedom fighter. Although the film could not make the cash registers
ringing at the box office but its gripping story about the
pre-independence era presents an insight into the tough freedom
struggle. Wonderful performances put up by Aamir Khan, Ameesha Patel and
Rani Mukerji’s make it worthwhile.

9.Haqeeqat was one of the first films made on the 1962 India-China war and
was a hit. Featuring Dharmendra, Balraj Sahni, Priya Rajvansh and Vijay
Anand, Haqeeqat was the story of a small battalion of Indian soldiers
who fought against the giant Chinese army in chilling winters in the
Ladakh region and sacrificed their lives while protecting the borders.
Its hit numbers – ‘Ab Tumhaare Hawaale Vatan Saathiyo’ still bring
tears.

10.The multi-starrer film Kranti
starring Manoj Kumar along with Dilip Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Hema
Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Parveen Babi, Sarika, Prem Chopra, Madan Puri
and Paintal was one of the biggest patriotic blockbusters. Set up in the
pre-independence era, Kranti was a fictional story written by Javed
Akhtar. The movie’s hit number ‘Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi’ picturized on
Hema Malini is still one of the most popular emotional songs of
Bollywood.

A hearty good afternoon to everyone and to my respected teachers .
The Independence day is a memoriam to honour and remember our nation’s
freedom struggle which finally ended on 15th August 1947. As we bow
down our heads today remembering silently the patriotic souls of
martyrs like Sardar Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi, Sukhdev Thapar,
Chandra Shekhar Azad, Rani Laxmibai, Subash Chandra Bose, Mangal Pandey
and numerous others. The national holiday is observed throughout India
with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades and cultural events.
Five years election system was started. Dr. Rajendra Prasad became
the first president and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first prime
minister of free India. People are united with one common thought –
patriotism.
During the first days of independence around midnight on 14 August
1947 Jawahar lal Nehru gave the popular tryst with destiny speech “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom .”
Today, the Prime minister hoists the Indian flag at the Red fort in
Delhi, twenty-one gun shots are fired in honour of the
occasion. Generally India receives terrorist threats on this day
especially Delhi and some other big cities like Mumbai. People fly kites
in many places throughout the country. The main setbacks for British in
India were – first the revolt of 1857, the Civil Disobedience Movement,
Quit India movement .
But as we know that even after 68 years of independence, we still
have to achieve freedom from corruption, poverty, incapability in or
minds and social stigma’s prevailing in our society. We demand more
transparency in the system.
Jai Bharat!

“Freedom is our birthright,” said Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the great freedom fighter of our country. 15 August
1947 is a significant day in history of India and in our lives as well.
It is the day when India attained its freedom from days of serving
Britishers for more than 200 years.
Legends like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Rajendra
Prasad, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad fought
against Britishers for freedom and gave their lives for
India. Independence Day is celebrated every year with great enthusiasm
by Indian embassies all over the world.
I am proud of the fact that I was born in INDIA and I dream of the
day when it will become a great country. People often look down upon
dreamers as given to useless fantasies. But foundations of most of the
achievements are often laid down in dreams. There would have been no
aeroplanes, if someone had not dreamt of flying like birds. No free
India, Tajmahal, no Paradise lost. These are immortal works of mortal
dreamer. I admit that I am an incorrigible dreamer, large part of my
dreams are related to my native land, my own India. I feel blessed that I
am born to this land and that I have the privilege to love her.
When India became free in 1947, we inherited from Britishers an
exploited economy. Raw materials were being transported to England and
India was being used as a profitable market for finished products. A
question that often crosses my mind on 15 august that – Are we
Progressing? Looking at the present scenario- clearly not !! Still, we
are in no position to compete with advanced nations like Japan, U.S.A,
and France. We shall have to launch a more ambitious programme of
scientific and technological development. The speed at which we are
progressing is not fast enough to bring us abreast of other nations.
Concluding all of it- I would like to share my dream- I dream of an
India in which all her citizens will be men and women of moral values
and will be ever ready to emulate the ideals of the Buddha, Kabir, Nanak, Gandhi.
I dream of an India with cleaner political atmosphere. Gandhi ji has
already taught us how to move forward and deal with zeal to truth and
politics. The day political leaders realize that power should be used
for the welfare of common people and not as an opportunity to fill their
own desires, they will acquire political integrity. If our political
leaders cultivate noble virtues, they will be able to lead the country
to unparalleled heights of glory and greatness.
There is no Hindu India, no Muslim India. There is no punjabi India
or Tamil India. There is no upper caste India or lower caste India.
There is just one India, our country, which we all want to become a
better place. We want a nation that is rich in economy, respected and
has a good place in the world.
In India, we have problems of huge dimensions and there are hardly
any solutions, but we cannot leave our fate to providence. We should
work towards it in team spirit. Our plans may be frustrated in the
beginning but they will be crowned with success if we pursue them with
singleness of purpose, sincerity and devotion.
Now I would like to wind up my speech with a line said by our great leader, .
Wish you a very Happy Independence Day.
